I saw this on the treadmill this morning (or was it the stair master?). Pretty damning for those ACORN individuals assisting the prostitute (aka “performance artist”) in her loan applications But unless you can really link it up the ACORN chain, I am not sure how Beck can make more of it (other than as a shocking but isolated incident).
I have no doubt myself that there is widespread corruption in ACORN, but Beck is going to need proof to make that stick.
That’s it?!? That’s not even a squib, much less a bombshell. It’s a pretty funny piece of performance art, but everybody from Borat to the Daily Show to Letterman has done the “say crazy/dumb/illegal things to an unsuspecting interviewee” routine.
Really? Hmmm, interesting perspective, though not surprising coming from you. I assume you don’t have any problem with Obama’s longstanding ties to this corrupt organization either?
I listened to Beck’s radio program this morning and, according to him and others involved investigating this (and there are quite a few), there is MUCH more to come. This is not all.
I could be misreading him, but I get the distinction impression this is HUGE. This video is just the tip of the iceberg. Again, we’ll see.
It will be interesting to see what else is out there. This slow, theatrical unveiling is just silly.
Based on a very SCOTUS opinion (Ashcroft v. Iqbal) it does not seem that this legally implicates anyone up the ACORN chain. But that could change depending on what else Mr. Beck has to show.
What? I don’t understand how you’re keeping score. What do these ACORN workers have to do with Obama? Is it how many people Beck has gotten fired v. how many people Obama has gotten fired?
It’s not necessarily about President Obama, it’s about the charge that a clearly partisan group like ACORN receives federal funds, and stands to get even more under the present administration.
Wish I could point out a mainstream media story on ACORN and federal funds, but there don’t appear to be any. [One way or the other.]
A google shows plenty of right-wing sites that report it, and mediamatters.com predictably denying it.
I’ll be happy if the present ACORN scandal—and it is a scandal, we should agree—makes sure that ACORN never gets its hands on a federal dollar from this day forward.
On that we should all agree, too. The rest, one way or another, is in the past, eh?
No, we can’t all agree ACORN should never get another federal dollar.
Halliburton kills US soldiers with shoddy construction work in Iraq (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/04/world/middleeast/04electrocute.html?hp), and it’s OK. A couple of ACORN staffers make a dumb move in a meeting with some provocateurs, and the entire organization should be banned from federal contracts? You’re saying what those two women did was worse than killing American soldiers?
Boy, it just burns you guys up that ACORN gets federal money. Defense contractors can gorge themselves until they puke, but God forbid an organization trying — however imperfectly — to help the poor should get any help from the government, or that their low-paid employees should ever screw up.
In ten years, ACORN got $31 million from the feds, according to lefty apologist John Boehner (http://republicanleader.house.gov/news/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=104821). That’s a rounding error for the bozos at Lockheed who’ve spent decades “working on” a missile defense system that still doesn’t work. That’s a fifth of one F-22.
Okay, I googled “ACORN federal funds” and I still have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m certainly not going to defend ACORN. It doesn’t seem to be a particularly well-run organization (although I’m guessing that varies from city to city).
But my question was what does this have to do with Obama. You seem to concede that the answer is nothing.
Arguing the obvious is not my cup of tea. Do the research. But if you are really that much in the dark:
“Obama has had an intimate and long-term association with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (Acorn), the largest radical group in America.”

My question is this: you seem to envision Beck and Obama being locked in some sort of struggle in which Beck scores a point every time he gets someone from ACORN fired. But do you think Obama is even playing that game?
I’m guessing that he doesn’t care one whit about ACORN, and that he is happy to have Beck engaged in this sideshow while he is busy trying to advance his agenda.
Feel free not to believe me on this point, but most Democrats don’t care about ACORN either. They are outside the mainstream of the Democratic party and their constituency seems to be poor, inner-city blacks — a pretty marginalized group, even in the Democratic party. (This is sort of obvious right? If they were genuinely influential, they wouldn’t have to engage in the kinds of tactics described in the article you link, especially in a heavily Democratic city like Chicago. Insiders don’t act that way, by definition.) Maybe it’s different in other cities, but I live in Washington, DC — a majority black city with a lot of poor people — and they’re not a significant player here (maybe they are in certain wards, but definitely not city-wide).
But maybe you’re arguing that harming ACORN doesn’t hurt Obama directly, but somehow tarnishes him in the eyes of voters, especially swing voters? I guess that’s possible, but I doubt it. By 2012, Obama will have a record of accomplishments and failures, and that’s what he’ll be judged on.
I think Obama knows this. The strange thing is that Beck doesn’t seem to.
“My question is this: you seem to envision Beck and Obama being locked in some sort of struggle”
What each side represents is locked in a struggle – in case you haven’t noticed.
“I’m guessing that he doesn’t care one whit about ACORN”
Right. Evidently, you didn’t read the article I linked to which was in response to the question you answered. . .
“Important as these questions of funding and partisanship are, the larger point is that Obama’s ties to Acorn — arguably the most politically radical large-scale activist group in the country — are wide, deep, and longstanding. If Acorn is adept at creating a non-partisan, inside-game veneer for what is in fact an intensely radical, leftist, and politically partisan reality, so is Obama himself. This is hardly a coincidence: Obama helped train Acorn’s leaders in how to play this game. For the most part, Obama seems to have favored the political-insider strategy, yet it’s clear that he knew how to play the in-your-face “direct action” game as well. And surely during his many years of close association with Acorn, Obama had to know what the group was all about.”
Yeah, I read the article. And it talks about pretty tangential ties and events that happened 15 to 20 years ago. “Obama had to know what the group was all about.” That’s some pretty weak sauce.
Look: we know that Obama was a lot closer to Jeremiah Wright a lot more recently, and yet he was perfectly happy to cut his losses once that relationship proved politically untenable and not look back. I don’t know why you think it’s any different with ACORN.
I mean really, do you think Obama is sitting in the Oval Office thinking about ACORN? I’m pretty sure he’s thinking about how to get health insurance reform through Congress.
But I don’t know why I’m arguing. I’m a liberal, and I support Obama’s agenda. I’m perfectly happy to have you guys focused on ACORN, and not where the real action is. I’m really just trying to understand why you think it’s beneficial to your side. And I’m still baffled.

Silly, perhaps. Methodical and purposeful, possibly.
Are these guys the same outfit who pulled the hidden-camera stunt at the Planned Parenthood clinic a while ago?
Update:

In that case, it’d be no contest. Obama’s work in the economy alone would put him lifetimes ahead…
Google “ACORN federal funds.”

What does ACORN have to do with Obama?! You gotta be kidding.
I love watching folks defend ACORN.
Yes, I’m seriously asking.
