Mocking people for their beliefs, eh? Impressive. I’d agree that these efforts do little to further the environmental cause, but how is this any better than media portrayals of “crazy Christians”? These people are obviously real and exist. But they don’t represent mainstream environmentalist beliefs and, nonetheless, people should not be mocked for their passions, however “crazy” they may seem, lest we open ourselves up to the same criticism and scorn.
Confession: I hate big government AND I love trees. God made them.
Still, these people look really ridiculous. Is this a real video or a joke?
* God made trees — not big government.
Other than a single reference to us “evolving into an industrialized society,” why is this listed under “the Cult of Darwin?”
God made trees. And God made people to love Him more than they love His trees.
Having to ask if this video is ‘for real’ fairly attests to it’s absolute inaneness.
You really need to lighten up, BSK. Sometimes people discombobulate their priorities, act stupidly and are mocked for it.
Any chance to suppose Christ’s suffering for three hours on the Cross would interest this group, Davy Buck?
Oh wait–trees were destroyed to make the Cross weren’t they? That might be a problem…
Nah, better let it be.
Why are the same people who defend these nutcases the same ones who enabled Hasan to murder our soldiers?
I guess the unionized whacko teachers who brainwash our children have been around long enough to brainwash them, as well.
These circles are just sad. When I used to be a liberal in college, I experienced plenty of them, for different causes. There is a yearning in people to come together and worship. It is a need put into us to seek the Creator, but people fill it with other things in the creation. It is sad.
I’m not sure if this video is authentic but I think it may be. If so, in all seriousness, I fail to find humor in it (although I clearly understand the reasons of those who do).
That young men and women have reduced themselves to such moronic sentimentality is pathetic to the point of near-pathology.
Interestingly, what would be the reactions from this same group if they witnessed such behavior outside of an abortion clinic?
BSK:
Because these people actually ARE crazy. “When I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it’s because we are still able to recognize one.” ~ Flannery O’Connor
Mocking idiocy is most certainly legitimate. Don’t be so foolish as to accept false premises and don’t be so guilt-ridden as to be afraid to admit that there really are freaks in the world. These people are FREAKS.
Cara:
Uh, yeah, I love trees too. They make excellent pistol grips.
Fireduck: Oh, just a hunch that there’s a connection.

Hmmmm . . .
Just the point, Soapbox Jill, that far too many of us are willing to take the easier route of embracing the creation rather than looking deeper for the creator.
Visitor – to reiterate, Romans 1
Imagine, Davy, from all of eternity, that one tree was designed for that one purpose. Nice.
Just to confirm, you’re referring to this portion of Romans I:
“…Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools…And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man…Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
If so, that about sums up that mess.
Davy and DemFascist,

For your reading disgust…
“…Don’t be so foolish as to accept false premises and don’t be so guilt-ridden as to be afraid to admit that there really are freaks in the world….”
When Christ told us to become like children, he did not mean us to do so–literally.
Thank you, Davy, for pointing out the root of this childish and irresponsible absurdity.
I betcha they stink real bad too.
“…Mocking people for their beliefs, eh?..”
Pardon me for laughing at your comment. You write in jest, or at least, I certainly hope so or else you’re simply trying to toy with our intelligence.
“Barabbas, Barabbas, your zeal blinds you to the Truth!…”
(“And that odor….” –in deference to your remark, Prof. Beckwith.)
Darn. Where’s John in Nashville when you need him?
Why is it, however, that a group of people that, at least from the video, appear to only be dangerous to the extent that they are annoying, can cause such ire? While I may not understand or think them completely rational their expressions of faith (?), I refuse to mock it simply because its not the same as mine.
Remember, from the outside of faith a guy walking on water and rising from the dead after three days sounds ridiculous.
If a bear or cougar came out of the woods and started slaughtering and eating these fools like so many migrating salmon or bunnies (yeah I know bunnies to not migrate), I am sad to say I would enjoy it.
Earth first!
Derek – yes.
Fireduck – “walking on water and rising from the dead after three days sounds ridiculous.” But its a historical fact. And you’re arguing from the viewpoint of a moral relativist. I worship a risen Saviour. These poor folks are worshiping inanimate objects. There is no comparison. Carrying on like this deserves no response other than derision and mockery. Anything less bestows legitimacy. If it weren’t real, it would make a great SNL skit. They’re freaks.
“…These poor folks are worshiping inanimate objects…”
Read this sentence a few more times, Fireduck, and then reflect again on the video. You should be laughing shortly.
Joe, if you know that bunnies don’t migrate, why set yourself up like that??? (yeah, I’m laughing)
“Why is it, however, that a group of people that, at least from the video, appear to only be dangerous to the extent that they are annoying, can cause such ire?”
I’m not so sure that they’re “only dangerous to the extent that they are annoying,” Fireduck. Would you walk into that group carrying a hatchet with the intent to take it to one of those trees?
Sounded oddly familiar. My children and I gather around the smoker for just such a ritual lament every time we put on a couple of Boston butts.
Opus:
I got all the laughs I needed from watching the video the first time.
Faith IS relative. Walking on water and rising from the dead are NOT historical facts. They are miracles and miracles, by definition, are matters of faith. They defy explanation and reason – and demand our faith to believe. Did it happen? Sure. Can it be proven? Nope. Although I’ll ask in person at some point, I guess.
Do pentecostals deserve your derision and mockery? http://video.tiscali.it/canali/truveo/1237224268.html.
Faith is a powerful thing, brother. I am happy to deride the consequences of religion. Killings in the name of faith, ignoring or trampling upon the faiths or dignity of others – those are things worthy of derision. Crying because trees are cut down? Perhaps God has spoken through them and they feel His pain at the destruction of His Creation. No, by mocking this we mock ourselves.
And I’ve been through this video a few times now – all I see are people upset because they don’t want trees cut down. I see nothing to show that they are ‘worshiping’ the trees. Unless I missed it. And, yes, I would walk in amongst them with a hatchet. Guess who wins?
My comment was directed at Fireduck, who apparently NEEDS VERY MUCH to see the humor in it. I used a portion of your earlier comment to make my point (hope you don’t mind).
I KNOW you see it’s humor, Davy.
I’m reading a good deal of whine-a-thoning here about these folks in the video being ‘picked on’ for their ‘beliefs’ in choosing to worship and lament over wooden stalks with leaves.
You leftists are such fraudulent ogres, I must tell you. How can any of you walk upright with such skewed realities? Picked on? Grown adults, on their knees in a forest, crying hysterically over the death of a bloody tree should be picked on, considering that PEOPLE die every day of brain tumors, abortion, euthanasia, starvation, cancer, abuse. PEOPLE with mouths to feed are forced to quit their jobs because of their beliefs in giving life to their babies with Down Syndrome. Men and women are put to death all over the world because of their beliefs in God, in goodness, in freedom.
Not one of you has the courage to call a spade a spade, but you readily reduce yourselves to shamelessly defending the rot and ridiculousness in the world. Yet you truly believe yourselves ‘progressive,’ which only confirms your ignorance.
The true martyrs of this world would have gladly accepted a little poking in place of what they ultimately suffered.
“And I’ve been through this video a few times now – all I see are people upset because they don’t want trees cut down. I see nothing to show that they are ‘worshiping’ the trees. Unless I missed it. And, yes, I would walk in amongst them with a hatchet. Guess who wins?”
Staring lovingly at a tree while tears stream down your face is ‘worshipping’ (Yes, you did ‘miss it,’ evidently). No you would not try to hack down a tree in front of that group because you obviously sympathize with their cause and wouldn’t want to cause them further pain.
Nope, lying doesn’t constitute a ‘win,’ Fireduck.
“The true martyrs of this world would have gladly accepted a little poking in place of what they ultimately suffered.”
Indeed, lamt. How crude an insult to cry at the foot of a dying tree while ignoring the Man who hangs from it.
Opus – sorry.
Fireduck: Pentecostalism is an accepted part of orthodox Christianity. (The video link did not work for me.) Yes, some of it is on the fringe, but I don’t see any comparison to these folks weeping in the woods over trees. Pentecostals still direct their worship and adoration toward the Creator, not toward pieces of wood. I can’t believe I’m even having to make the case.
These folks are performing acts of worship – hands raised, crying out in “repentance” and “sorrow.” I don’t understand why you can’t bring yourself to just admit the obvious.
I will say it again – as we mock others, so we mock ourselves.
Nowhere did I say that I didn’t find it humorous. Personally I find it kind of silly. But I also find it silly that people would express their faith by playing with poisonous snakes.
But I’m not going to spend time mocking them.
“Staring lovingly at a tree while tears stream down your face is ‘worshipping’ (Yes, you did ‘miss it,’ evidently). No you would not try to hack down a tree in front of that group because you obviously sympathize with their cause and wouldn’t want to cause them further pain.

You missed THAT point entirely. I have a hatchet. They don’t. I win.
And I don’t know who you think you are; accusing me or anyone else of “lying” without damned good reason is offensive. Not only are you ABSOLUTELY incorrect in your assumptions about me and where my sympathies lie, you need to know that I value my honor and integrity. Apparently, you think little enough of yours to accuse others with no basis for the accusation. I will not apologize for saying this: your accusation is offensive.
I do not sympathize with them. But I strive to be the most charitable with those whom I disagree the most. And I believe that the foundation of our faith and our society require that to be morally honest. Save your accusations of groundless worship for those who kill in the name of their god. And save your insults for someone else.
“…Crying because trees are cut down? Perhaps God has spoken through them and they feel His pain at the destruction of His Creation. No, by mocking this we mock ourselves.”
And you believe this? And you’re not sympathizing with them–make up your mind. All in all, I’m unimpressed with your tirade.
“…your accusation is offensive…”
That’s tough. I’m offended everyday and get over it. When a group of oversized children drop to their knees and cry for trees while unborn children are slaughtered for no reason at all, I will mock such idiocy. That’s honesty, too.
“I will say it again – as we mock others, so we mock ourselves.”
And I forgot about this one–so what? I’m a member of the human race and I can mock myself if I so choose.
Sometimes mockery shows us the truth about ourselves.
I don’t know about you, but I can take it, especially if the mockery is legitimate.
OH CRAP. You used the Abortion defense. Wait…..that means I win.
Sucker.
At least I have a defense.
…Nor did you need to resort to a temper-tantrum, opus, in an attempt to gain the upper hand.
“the Abortion defense”
You reduce abortion to a statement like that while justifying fools like those in the video in the name of charity–and you dare to whine about being ‘offended’??
You’d better go; you’ll be late for Howdy-Doody Time, little boy.
“as we mock others, so we mock ourselves.”
I just don’t buy your circular reasoning. You seem to be suggesting that all beliefs are equal. Sounds a lot like relativism to me, which deserves the bayonet.
I’ll tell you what, Ann/Opus – either of you make a RATIONAL argument about exactly WHAT abortion has to do with some people crying about trees, and I’ll listen.
Buts it the same old straw man defense time and time again. You don’t like the fact that you can’t give a rational response so…..ABORTION! Clearly, because I don’t see the great harm in someone crying over a tree…ABORTION! Wait, someone’s dying on a cross?….ABORTION! My God! Obama is making a statement on Veteran’s Day! ABORTION! Global Warming? ABORTION! What? ABORTION!
Yeah, its Howdy Doody time all right. Yeah, I’m the one reducing abortion to ridiculous connections to trees.
Ridiculous. “Little Boy?” Really? Are you so ashamed of your ridiculous personal beliefs and so concerned over the frailty of your faith that the best you can do is that?
And I know, you’re now going to use the opportunity to tell me that I’m a stinking commie pinko liberal who hates God, common sense, and unborn babies, and hangs out with people who smoke pot, tie themselves to trees, and worship at the altar of Obama and other false gods. Because that follows the same way that Abortion does. And it’s the only rational conclusion, right?
Abortion!
No use trying to save face, FireDuck/Anon, no one’s buying it.
There you go–just do whatever you need to do, Fireduck/Anon, to save face.
We know–reality bites.
Once again – no response given because I suspect that you have no answer you can articulate.
Done. This discussion is now pointless because -
Abortion!
