The Perfect Bleg for SA Readers

There’s a reason I won’t give up posting privileges at SA until Steve Dillard pries them from my cold, dead hands.

Where else could I ask the readers for a recommendation on where I can find a really good barbecue cook-off or a barbecue festival?  Now, listen, I’m not talking about any of that Texas brisket stuff.  I’m talking about barbecue pork and chicken.

  1. John Says:

Jack Daniel’s World Championship in Lynchburg, TN.
It is a true championship in the sense that each team must have won a sanctioned contest to even be invited.
The only drawback is that I think it is October, although Lynchburg (and any of southern Middle Tennessee) is beautiful that time of year.

  2. Randy Says:

BBQ pork and BBQ chicken are oxymorons.

    Really.

  3. Philip Says:

Memphis in May. The Best BBQ city and the best contest.

  4. Hunter Baker Says:

Excellent suggestions so far. Both sound like must visit occasions. As for the obvious Texan up there. Go tenderize some beef!

  5. Brock Townsend Says:

    “……I’m talking about barbecue pork……”

From Eastern North Carolina, of course……

  6. Hunter Baker Says:

Brock, I’ve had some very fine pork from Big Bob Gibson’s in Decatur, Alabama, but the type of barbecue they serve there is the vinegar based sauce style associated with the Carolinas.

  7. John Says:

Big Bob Gibson’s is a must visit for anyone who truly enjoys BBQ.

  8. Randy Says:

You know, most early Texans were from the South. My ancestors left Tennessee and the Carolinas six and seven generations ago in search of meat fit to eat without being drowned in sauces red or yellow.

But, all fun aside, I have to admit, I’ve had enjoyable meals called BBQ in the South, in Alabama particularly, so I’m willin’ to give in a bit on BBQ.

But I won’t budge on Chili.

    Good luck on your quest.

  9. Hunter Baker Says:

You know what, Randy. I want to be friends, but I just can’t meet you on the chili, either. I just don’t see how a bowl of chili can be any good without some nice pintos or kidneys.

  10. lucas Says:

Now, listen, I’m not talking about any of that Texas brisket stuff.

for shame…pork and chicken are just a warm up to what god eats when he does BBQ.

  11. El Jefe Maximo Says:

Wow…you’re kidding me. They have barbeque in places other than Texas ?

    Brisket is God’s own food…

  12. Hunter Baker Says:

Good heavens, I thought this was called Southern Appeal, not Lone Star Appeal!

  13. JTG Says:

    Ask and ye shall receive:

the granddaddy of ‘em all, the Lexington Barbecue Festival, in the home of “Lexington-Style” Barbecue, Lexington, NC. You’ll have to wait ’til October, but believe me, it’s worth the wait.

  14. Hunter Baker Says:

    Good man, JTG.

  15. SamChevre Says:

    Not a festival.

    Not a cook-off.

But it is the best pork barbecue anywhere.

Scott’s Barbecue in Lexington, TN–about halfway between Nashville and Memphis. It’s only open Friday and Saturday, if it hasn’t changed. West Tennessee style–whole hog, cooked slowly over hickory, served with vinegar slaw.
