A “Christmas War” Chuckle
Count me among those who try not to get too excited about various “insults” to Christmas and the advance of the godless heathen secularists. But I have to chuckle - or maybe grimace just ever so slightly - when I get those catalogs and email solicitations that trumpet loudly that there are just a few days left for your “Holiday” shopping in order to get the items there before, oh, Dec. 23rd. I understand the sentiment - surely there’s someone, somewhere who would find offense at an advertisement that actually suggested you should be buying for Christmas - but it’s still a bit, oh, silly.

That reminds me of the coloring book Santa at the mall gave my daughter. It was filled with pictures of Santa, reindeer, candy canes and the like, but the title on the cover was “Holiday Fun Book.” I asked my husband, “Why would anyone who didn’t celebrate Christmas bring their kids to see Santa at the mall?”

Given that the last day of Hanukkah is also December 23rd this year, there’s another plausible explanation for use of the word “holiday” rather than Christmas

Hmmm…I must have missed the part where folks decorate for Hanukkah with greenery, “Holiday Trees”, and lots of red and green. But I guess it is “plausible” in a lawyerly sort of way…;)

Hey, my brother-in-law is Jewish, and they celebrate Hanukkah, but he *loves* Christmas trees, the bigger the better. They never fail to have one.
We also noted that this year’s Fisher-Price catalogue features their kiddie Nativity set prominently on the cover. “True Christmas” fans might take heart…:-)

Oh lets stop with the tomfoolery. The worlds Christian population, over 2 billion. The world’s Jewish population, 13 million.
Yes there are other religions out there, but the west is predominantly Christian. Does this really hurt people’s sensibilities? Can we have no traditions anymore? Please. Pretty please. What is it you people want, you know the ones, they despise that there may actually be an overwhelming majority of people that like Christmas, and all it’s trimmings. Is it the perfect holiday, no, its been bastardized, commercialized, and plain old disguised as something other then what it should be. That’s just our fault, instead of cooking a turkey, pouring some eggnog and singing and socializing the evening away, we have made it a competition, and you know that sucks.
Enjoy a meal, have drink of choice, invite some company over. Put on some old songs and crank up the stove or fireplace, be thankful for what we have, its so so much more then many. Don’t think democrat or republican, don’t think socialism or conservatism, and don’t think you have to feel guilty to feel good, just enjoy it, and believe that yes, we are lucky.
But most of all can we just say have your self a merry little Christmas and all that it may entail.
Merry Christmas to all…

I’m not sure what “too excited” means but the point is not “insults” to Christmans. Rather the focus ought to be why should we not resist infringements on individual liberties? Why should a child in grammer school, asked to comment on holiday festivites, feel the need to be guarded against talking about things like manger scenes because such things are not “inclusive?”
Conservatives all too often get excited when the horse has already left the barn.
