What if a Republican candidate had said this?

From an AP story about Sen. Obama’s visit to Mount Rushmore:

Obama said it was his first visit to the landmark.

He did express curiosity about the filming of a chase scene in “North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint that included a death-defying scramble over Rushmore’s presidential faces.

“How did they get up there in the first place?” he asked ranger Wesley Jensen.

“They didn’t. It was a movie set,” Jensen told him.

You can watch a good bit of the relevant sequence here.

Hat tip to K-Lo at The Corner.

More: Looking for the video link, I ran across a blog about the movie that Hitchcock fans will enjoy. It includes a storyboard with still photos from the Mount Rushmore scene on pages 9 and 10.

If a Republican said it, he’d get elected. See Quayle, Dan, and Bush, George W.

ok – i’ll bite. what exactly would have happened?

  3. “Potatoe.” “What a terrible thing to have lost one’s mind. Or not to have a mind at all.” “Is our children learning?” “Misunderestimated.”

“Obama is stupid” would then become a meme and then the meme justifies itself — reporting on every tongue slip as “further proof of his problem.”

  4. Wade Hampton says:

Does anyone else think that Obama is just not very smart? I mean the guy is obviously very polished and well-spoken but he just doesn’t seem to have the ‘horse-sense’ it takes to run this country.

  5. Joe says:

Obama is smart. You don’t get to edit Law Review at Harvard and graduate Magna Cum Laude with out some smarts. http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/05/how_smart_is_obama.asp

But common sense? Twenty years at Trinity United and he just decides today to quit? Like he could not foresee this would be a political issue in the future?

Obama said he also regrets “all the attention that my campaign has visited on” the church.

“We had reporters grabbing church bulletins and calling up the sick and the shut-in,” he said. “That’s just not how people should have to operate in their church.”

Barack is not really sorry, just sorry his association with Trinity became a poltical issue for his campaign.

Wright, Ayers, Plfeger, Rezko. Barack Obama may be smart, but he has zero common sense when it comes to the people he associates with.
