More Seersucker
Ok, the comments were filling up, so I thought I’d make a new post rather than ask/respond in the comment section of the original post. I’ve heard that the big thing in D.C. is that those who wear seersucker suits do so with black shoes and belts….I’m not too sure I like the look. Like I said earlier, I’ve worn my in the past with brown bucks or either brown Sperry’s, sans socks.
As for Jesse, who’s getting married and sporting tan seersucker suits, I would think brown loafers would be fine, absent socks. Thoughts?

Perhaps you should get together with this guy…..

I don’t like the idea of black shoes/socks with seersucker. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in practice, but I can’t imagine it looking very good.)
White or brown bucks, absolutely (preferably white).
I think brown loafers would be fine for Jesse’s wedding (congrats to you and best wishes to her on that, by the way, Jesse!).

Proximo…the dude has a dark belt on with white shoes….come on now…

Oh brother. Ignore my advice at your own peril. Go ahead. Put on white bucks. Let the Pat Boone jokes begin…

You know, of course, that no self-respecting southern boy should wear a seersucker suit without a skimmer…

I liked the line..”Dapper gents from the Carolinas wear ‘em with their summer seersucker suits.”

Nathan, Nathan -
First - You should be wearing suspenders not a belt. But if you must wear a belt - if the seersucker is blue and white - then wear a blue belt, blue socks and white bucks. If a tan and white/off white seersucker, then go with a khaki belt, khaki belt and dirty bucks. If the seersucker is grey and white, go with a black belt, black belt and white bucks. You shouldn’t own a seersucker in any other color.

Suspenders are a must with seersucker, but with one caveat: you must be fat. Seriously, slim guys look ridiculous in them.
Nathan: Sperrys are far too casual to be worn with a suit. I even scold my friends who wear them with a “coat and tie.”
Also, I can’t believe no one has metioned this yet: SADDLE SHOES!! White and black saddle shoes with a black belt is perfect for a seersucker suit (blue or gray; not tan)

>I don’t like the idea of black shoes/socks with seersucker
Hey, wait a minute. I wear gray socks with my light gray seersucker but black shoes and a black belt are classy. Better than tan or brown, IMO. And come on, if you, say, walk to work, you _can’t_ wear white shoes. Here’s a nice picture on the Brooks Bros. site:

>SADDLE SHOES
Ouch.

Nathan- Always wear socks with pants. The no socks thing is very ’80s. (Why am I starting to imagine that the end result of our advice to you is going to be Karl from “Slingblade” in a seersucker suit??)

Ramson…thanks for the link to the pic….that’s not a bad look, although I think I like brown over black with a blue seersucker suit.
When I’m sporting the “professor” look, blazer, khakis, oxford and tie, I wear sperrys without hesitation….no go, Mox?

Keith, I can’t sport suspenders quite as sharp as you :)….however, I do like the blue sock and blue belt loook….but how blue is the question?

The Shoes make the suit. I say go with Spectators. I love them.

i would like to be “fancy” but in oklahoma and texas it is too hot to wear a suit …are these suckers cool? i mean i know the deep south can get hot and muggy but not texas hot and muggy..thin dress pants and a white shirt are about as fancy as we can get in the summer time…and our rule of thumb is brown boots with brown belt or black boots with black belt ect. but never white shoes of any kind

Ok, ok, Ramson’s eyepatch. Black shoes/belt with a grey suit (even seersucker) is just fine. I hadn’t necessarily been thinking about grey. Black still shouldn’t be worn with blue or tan seersucker.
And if you can’t wear white shoes, brown (or black, if your suit is grey) is ok. White bucks are exceptionally spiffy, but I understand that not everyone can swing them.

Nathan: I would never wear Sperrys with a tie, unless, of course, you’re about to go hop on a boat. With a blazer, khakis and tie, you should try to go a little more formal with your shoes: penny loafers (with or without tassels), bucks, or even brown oxford (or similar) style dress shoes.
However, if you take away the tie, you can probably get away with wearing sperrys.

>are these suckers cool?
Ahem. Yes.

Nathan - navy blue socks and belt.

One other thing - khakis with a blazer and loafers sans the socks is just fine.

Brooks Bros is offering the seersucker suit shown in Ransom’s post for $328. Shirt, tie, etc.. extra, of course. According to their website, they introduced seersucker to the US in 1830.

You can get the best Seersucker suit made from Haspel of New Orleans. Esuits offers them reduced for $200, and Hunter and Coggins of NC carries them for $275. They also have the abysmal “pinfeather”, which is a wrinkless blend that doesn’t breath. If you’re wearing it up in Yankeeland, it might go alright, but expect heat stroke down here in such a get up.
