3 Rebel Yells to ““Two Immutable Laws of Internet Discourse””

  1. Sage Says:

Rule #3 - If a post contains sarcasm that is equal parts sneering, condescention, and mockery, the likelihood of its being written by Mark Shea is directly proportional to the leve of said salrcasm.

No one can doubt Mr. Shea’s zeal or sincerity. But I have encountered very few writers capable of so much offensive hyperbole, accompanied by so much self-pity and wounded innocence. He’s the only man I’ve ever seen who can simultaneously caricature another viewpoint beyond recognition, and affect shock at having his views misrepresented. What is worse, the man seems constitutionally incapable of divorcing his opinions from his artfully sarcastic distortions. For this reason I find him as unreadable as Andrew Sullivan, which is really a shame considering that he is so often right where Sullivan is wrong.

No matter how often his readers point this out, he is utterly unfazed–he absolutely can not be induced to question whether the legions of people expressing this same opinion might be basing it on something actual and real about him. Such a waste.

  2. BillyHW Says:

Mark Shea can dish it, but he can’t take it.

  3. Marc Lewandowski Says:

Sage: precisely. I used to be a regular visitor, but that style is what seems to bring the legions to his site, and it has only gotten worse. I might follow a link there every now and again, but while marginally entertaining he’s not so useful if you, you know, really want to debate something. What Billy said has some truth to it, too.
