“Chaplain Refuses Kmiec Communion”

Filed under: Abortion, Barack Obama, Catholicism/Catholic Culture
By Feddie (Email) @ 9:00 pm

Kmiec provides the details here.

M.Z. Forrest believes that the chaplain’s denial of communion to Kmiec violates Canon 912

M.Z. may indeed be right, and I don’t doubt that he knows much more about Canon Law than I do, but I think I’ll wait for Ed Peters’s analysis.

Either way, I am glad the good chaplain gave Kmiec an earful.

Update: If any of SA’s readers know the name of the chaplain or how to get in touch with him, please let me know via email. I would like to offer him an opportunity to give his version of the event in question here at SA.

Update II: Jay has additional details and commentary here.

Update III: Jay has informed me that Ed Peters has come down on the side of Kmiec; and if Peters says the chaplain violated Canon Law then I accept his conclusion without reservation.

A good sign

Filed under: Abortion, Catholicism/Catholic Culture, PBXVI
By Feddie (Email) @ 9:36 am

I found this extremely encouraging:

Pope Benedict XVI received an ecstatic welcome from 57,000 faithful in Yankee Stadium for the final Mass of his six-day visit to the U.S., drawing applause when he spoke of protecting unborn children and when he called a new generation to priesthood and religious life . . . [W]hile calling young people to put their faith in Christ into action, he made his strongest statement of the visit regarding abortion.

He asked them to uphold “truths which alone can guarantee respect for the inalienable dignity and rights of each man, woman and child in our world — including the most defenseless of all human beings, the unborn child in the mother’s womb,” he said, to long, loud applause.

George W. Bush: Catholic president?

Filed under: Catholicism/Catholic Culture, George W. Bush
By Feddie (Email) @ 12:11 pm

I’ve been meaning to link to this fascinating article by a fellow at WaPo, entitled “A Catholic Wind in the White House.” Here’s a taste:

Shortly after Pope Benedict XVI’s election in 2005, President Bush met with a small circle of advisers in the Oval Office. As some mentioned their own religious backgrounds, the president remarked that he had read one of the new pontiff’s books about faith and culture in Western Europe.

Save for one other soul, Bush was the only non-Catholic in the room. But his interest in the pope’s writings was no surprise to those around him. As the White House prepares to welcome Benedict on Tuesday, many in Bush’s inner circle expect the pontiff to find a kindred spirit in the president. Because if Bill Clinton can be called America’s first black president, some say, then George W. Bush could well be the nation’s first Catholic president. (more…)

“Catholics Organize to Elect Barack Obama”

Filed under: 2008, Abortion, Catholicism/Catholic Culture, McCain
By Feddie (Email) @ 3:20 pm

This is discouraging, to say the least.

But it isn’t helping matters that Senator McCain has declined to reverse course on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Say what you will about President Bush, but on the non-negotiables he was almost perfect. And while Senator McCain’s pro-life record is much. much stronger than Senator Obama’s, the fact remains that his support of federal funding for ESCR is enough for some Catholics to ditch the GOP and return home to the Democratic Party. If this happens, McCain and the GOP are in big trouble.

This wonderful piece by Eric Pavlat came out before I restarted SA, and I’ve been meaning to link it. Here’s the money quote:

Torture violates the dignity of the tortured as well as the torturer. Minds like Cardinal Martino and John Paul II oppose torture categorically. It’s time for Catholics to follow suit.

Amen.
